Homeworking option favoured by UK accountants

Over half of accountants in the UK believe having the option to work from home would "greatly improve" their work-life balance.

A new survey of 2,000 professionals in the accountancy sector shows 86 per cent regularly work beyond their normal hours and 38 per cent are often in the office after 10pm.

The study, commissioned by online accountancy systems provider E-conomic, has prompted calls for employers in the industry to facilitate more homeworking as a means of attracting the best staff – as well as improving the work-life balance of existing employees.

When asked if technology could improve their work-life balance, 60 per cent of accountants agreed that working from home would benefit them if they were given the means to do so.

"These considerations also have a potential impact on our future talent pool as new blood comes through the ranks," confirmed a spokesperson for E-conomic. "In a 2008 survey of Oxbridge graduates, a majority in every sector said they would prioritise work-life balance when thinking about their career."

News of the findings comes in the same week office machine expert Brother revealed a rise in sales as a result of growing demand from homeworkers during the recession.
