Parents need to balance work and family time

Parents have been warned that in order to be successful while working from home, they need to find a way of balancing their family life and work time.

Speaking to the Vancouver Sun, Rhonda Breitkreuz, assistant professor at the department of human ecology at the University of Alberta, explained that “getting out of the rat race” by working from home is very appealing to a variety of people.

However, parents of young children in particular often describe how difficult it can be to “get anything done when your kids are around.”

To get around this issue, Professor Breitkreuz suggests that a lot of parents working at home are compromising by working fewer hours.

"There's only so much time in a day and you have to figure out how to do it – I would guess they would be shorter numbers of hours in order to integrate,” she told the news source.

One example is Carol McBee, who left her job at an office when her daughter was born in 2008. She is now the head of two businesses, both of which she runs from home. To achieve this she does a lot of work in the very early morning and makes sure she is organised so as not to waste any time, for example making use of the time when her child is taking a nap.
