Canadian stay-at-home mums becoming work-at-home mums

Research from Canada is showing that stay-at-home mums are increasing becoming work-at-home mothers as they use their education, skills and pre-motherhood work experience to launch careers from home.

The survey was carried out for eBay Canada by Leger Marketing and it found that a third of Canadians know a mother who has either started her own business already or plans to. They have been dubbed “mompreneurs.”

The internet has been a major factor in opening up work options for mothers at home. A Canadian magazine called “MOMpreneur” was launched online in 2006, and a website called savvymom.ca was established in 2004 by two university friends who wanted to launch a publication that would cover the “ever-present challenges of modern-day motherhood.”

It is believed that many mompreneur business ideas come from women's frustration at not being able to find existing suppliers for products they want.

Robeez baby shoe company was established in 1994, for example, by a new mother who couldn't find the shoes she wanted for her baby so started making her own. According to the firm’s website, Robeez now has an annual turnover of Can$15 million (£9.67 million).
