Homeworkers ‘need leaders not micromanagers’

The growing numbers of people in the UK who do their jobs from home want to work for a boss who leads rather than micromanages, it has been suggested.

Director of the Future Work Forum at Henley Management College Peter Thomson claimed recently that home-based workers are most effective when their bosses can inspire commitment and application, reports management-issues.

Mr Thomson also insists that the modern workplace will be reshaped due to the increasing prevalence of homeworking and that management teams will be forced to respond in order to maintain a competitive business edge.

He told the news service: "Today’s managers are very aware of the commercial and competitor advantages associated with more flexible employers.

"However, they are struggling to turn theory into practice and clearly need support to adapt their supervision styles."

Maria Ferris, director of workforce diversity at IBM recently told the Journal News that modern technology has made working from home a viable option for more people then ever before.
