Cornwall to be focus of work from home recruitment drive

Cornwall is to be the focus of a recruitment drive to fill work from home jobs, thanks partly to the quality of its broadband services.

London-based Arise Virtual Solutions (AVS) says it is looking to take on a further 1,000 remote workers and that Cornwall could be an ideal place to hunt for staff because of the widespread availability of fast broadband, the relatively low cost of living and high levels of unemployment.

AVS has described its recruitment approach as “homeshoring”, rather than “offshoring”. It employs staff to answer calls for third party businesses. The roles are largely flexible and almost all available on a work at home basis. Candidates need a good telephone manner and customer service experience, and computer skills and foreign language knowledge are a bonus.

AVS already employs 2,000 agents in America, Canada, Ireland and the UK. Workers can specify their availability two weeks in advance in 30-minute slots of time.

Dickon Moon, director of strategic sourcing at AVS and also from Cornwall himself, said, “I am delighted to be able to link the development of the super-fast broadband rollout by BT with my own passion for my home county."
