UK gets mobile communications boost

The UK has been handed a boost to its mobile communications coverage through the creation of a number of new Wi-Fi hotspots around the country, it has been revealed.

Home-based workers and those aiming to operate outside the traditional office environment now have a greater scope for doing so after AT&T added 9,000 locations across Europe to its list of Wi-Fi covered locations.

Working with AT&T on the project was telecoms firm The Cloud, which has already been involved in Wi-Fi endeavours and other projects aimed at boosting the flexibility and mobility of workforces in the UK and around the world.

John V Slamecka, vice president for AT&T’s operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: "AT&T is committed to continue to expand its enterprise mobility portfolio which will provide our customers with flexible Wi-Fi to access corporate networks and stay in touch with the home or the office anywhere and at any time."

Stephen Beynon, managing director of ntl:Telewest Business, suggested recently that the trend towards home-based working is "gathering pace" in the UK.
